What Do We Learn In Third Grade?
Reading/Language
Trophies is the integrated reading and language series we will be using this year. Be sure to visit the Trophies site for fun games and activities that reinforce important skills.   Each unit of study has a theme.  Reading and writing will go hand in hand with each theme as we develop our language skills.  Since reading is a fundamental element of education, students will be required to read a minimum of 15 minutes each night.  Hopefully, this will be an enjoyable time for children to do just before bedtime either alone or with a parent or sibling.
Math
Our class will continue to develop important math skills and concepts.  Students will be learning multiplication and division as well as fractions, decimals and geometry.  We will continue to develop problem solving skills.  Math lessons will include not only whole group instruction, but small group, partner, and individual activites using a workshop model.  Students will often be encouraged to explain and discuss their mathematical thinking.  Opportunities to verbalize their thoughts and strategies give students the chance to clarify their thinking and learn from others
Writing
We will be doing a variety of writing in the classroom this year, from research projects to poetry.  Students will learn all stages of the writing process as well as strategies to help them to revise and edit their writing pieces.
Science
Once again, we will be using the KITES program for science.  The hands-on activities we do in science are fun and educational.  The kits we use in third  grade are Structures of Life (the study of plants and crayfish), Sound/Light, and Water.
Health
Health will be taught primarily by the Physical Education teacher. The units in health include nutrition, body systems, dental hygiene, safety and first aid, drugs, and mental health.
Social Studies
In third grade we will be studying communities.  We will start by learning more about our own community.  We will then learn about different communities both here in the United States and around the world.  We will also focus on  some important figures who have influenced the way we live in our communities today.
Handwriting
This is the year students learn cursive writing.  The first part of the year we will be learning the basic strokes and the correct forms of each upper and lower case letter.  After winter break, we will be using cursive writing on most of our daily work.
